Submission Guidelines

Bengaluru Review is an online monthly publication. We welcome unsolicited submissions of poetry, prose, art, and book reviews, not necessarily that order. We request you to read our submission guidelines intently before submitting them.

General Submission Period: We are open to submission all year round in our monthly reading periods. The reading period begins on the 20th of each month to the 5th of the next month (for example April 20 to May 5).

Special-Themed Issues of Bengaluru Review (July-September 2020):

1. July: We will be running and curating our Short Story Competition throughout this month.

2. August: We will be curating a special Bangalore-based issue.

3. September: We will be curating a special issue in collaboration with Asia Pacific Writers & Translators (APWT)

While you're welcome to submit to our short story contest and the Bangalore-based edition, regular submissions to our October Issue will be open between 20th Sept-5th Oct 2020.

We are a small team of dedicated volunteers. We request you to kindly adhere to our submission guidelines and ensure that you do not submit twice within the same reading period. As editors, we are rooting for you and want to give your work the full consideration it deserves.

Poetry (including Translations)

We expect the translator to secure the necessary and required permissions to translate from the copyright holder or institution. Please confirm this in your cover letter while submitting. Please send the bio or introduction of the author along with the translator. In case the translations get accepted, Bengaluru Review will hold the first electronic rights of the same with the translator.

  • Age, theme, and genre are no barriers.
  • You can submit a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 poems (3-6) per submission.
  • Please send in your entries in a single document attached in either of the following formats ONLY: .doc, .docx.
  • We suggest that submissions be formatted with 12 pt. Times New Roman or Garamond type.
  • Simultaneous submission is allowed. We request you to immediately notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Please submit only once per reading period. You can submit again in the next reading period.
  • Multiple submissions are considered if they pertain to different categories (poetry, fiction, etc.).
  • Blank e-mails with no body will not be read. Please add a cover letter into the body of the email that includes your first and last name, email address, the title of your work(s), and a brief bio (strictly under 100 words or less).
  • Please include an author photograph in a high-resolution landscape mode. You can attach up to 2-3 pictures. Please note that the minimum dimensions of a photo should be at least 800 x 420 pixels (W x H).
  • We undergo a "blind" submission process. Personal information should not appear anywhere in the attached document(s).

Short-fiction (including Translations)

We expect the translator to secure the necessary and required permissions to translate from the copyright holder or institution. Please confirm this in your cover letter while submitting. Please send the bio or introduction of the author along with the translator. In case the translations get accepted, Bengaluru Review will hold the first electronic rights of the same with the translator.

  • Age, theme, and genre are no barriers.
  • Please submit only up to 2 pieces of work (1-2) per submission. Short-story (fiction) and flash fiction are both allowed.
  • The word limit for short-fiction is 5,000 words and flash fiction is 1,000 words. There are no minimum word limit.
  • Please send in your entries in a single document attached in either of the following formats ONLY: .doc, .docx.
  • We suggest that submissions be formatted with 12 pt. Times New Roman or Garamond type.
  • Simultaneous submission is allowed. We request you to immediately notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Please submit only once per reading period. You can submit again in the next reading period.

Literary Reviews and Essays (including Translations)

Please send the bio or introduction of the author along with the translator. In case the translations get accepted, Bengaluru Review will hold the first electronic rights of the same with the translator.

  • Age, theme, genre are no barriers.
  • Please submit up to 2 pieces of work (1-2) per submission.
  • The maximum word limit is 3000 words. Reviews exceeding the word limit may also be considered if adjudged exceptional.
  • Please send in your review attached in either of the following formats ONLY: .doc, .docx.
  • We suggest that submissions be formatted with 12 pt. Times New Roman or Garamond type.
  • Simultaneous submission is allowed. We request you to immediately notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Please submit only once per reading period. You can submit again in the next reading period.

  • Age, theme, and genre are no barriers.
  • Please submit ONLY 1 photo-essay/story per submission.
  • The word limit is 500 words. You may send up to 15 (10-15) photographs. However, the final decision on the number of works to be featured will be taken by the Editorial team.
  • Please send in your photos attached in either of the following formats ONLY: .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, or .pdf .
  • We suggest that submissions be formatted with 12 pt. Times New Roman or Garamond type.

Visual Art/Illustrations

  • Age, theme, and genre are no barriers.
  • Please submit up to 5 pieces of work per submission.
  • Please include a 1-50 word "artist's statement" about each work. However, the final decision on the number of works to be featured will be taken by the Editorial teams.
  • Please send in your artwork attached in either of the following formats ONLY: .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, or .pdf .
  • We accept most forms of visual art; this includes, but is not limited to photography, illustration, animation, sculpture, painting, ceramics, and drawing.
  • We suggest that submissions be formatted with 12 pt. Times New Roman or Garamond type.
  • Simultaneous submission is allowed. We request you to immediately notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere.
  • Please submit only once per reading period. You can submit again in the next reading period.
  • Multiple submissions are considered if they pertain to different categories (poetry, fiction, etc.).

Copyrights

  • Bengaluru Review retains the right to publish your work as a whole, or pieces thereof, on our website and social media handles. All rights revert to the individual authors upon publication. We ask that you credit Bengaluru Review as the platform of original publication in case of future re-prints and issues.
  • By agreeing to allow us to publish your work, you, the contributor, grant Bengaluru Review First World Electronic Rights to the work & non-exclusive Archival Rights so we can keep it archived online. We also reserve the rights to use and re-use the work, contributor’s name, image, and/or biographical data in advertising or promotional purposes in future print or digital mediums.
  • Additionally, we reserve rights for publication in any of our future print anthologies, which would be communicated to you, the contributor, beforehand. Reprints of your work that previously appeared in our publication are considered second serial rights. These rights are non-exclusive, meaning the contributor can sell the piece to many publications at the same time. In case your work is republished elsewhere, we ask that you credit Bengaluru Review.
  • You, the contributor, confirm that your work is wholly original, does not violate or infringe upon the copyright or privacy of any other person, company, or organization whatsoever and that you, the contributor, are the sole owner and creator of the work to be published. You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Bengaluru Review and its staff from and against any and all claims resulting from a breach of this warranty.
  • All other rights revert to the contributors upon publication in Bengaluru Review and we would be honored to receive an acknowledgment should your piece appearing with us is reprinted elsewhere in future publications.
  • Note: We do not own your work and we will take it off our website on your request. Bengaluru Review, however, holds the right to edit your work for improved readability and the title that appears on the website may be modified at the editor's discretion. On submission, you agree to the conditions presented above and will not hold Bengaluru Review responsible under the conditions explained.

Payment

  • Bengaluru Review is currently a non-paying community. We are working towards paying our writers and artists soon. However, the contributions until that time are completely voluntary and unpaid.

Note: Kindly do not submit work to us that is misogynist, sexist, racist, homophobic, or one that seeks to intentionally target a section of society with malice. We are committed to providing a safe space for artists and writers, and will not entertain any such submissions.
