In Pictures : Broken Spirits - An Art Project on Depression

'When we idolize so many statues of God in our country, with materials and emotions, I want to ask you, how do we forget to nurture our soul and mind which are God to our very own bodies? Broken spirits don't just lie below the banyan tree or inside the ocean, but also around us', writes Vritti Kotian.
"Broken Spirits" is an art project started by Critti Kotian in collaboration with photographer Abijith Pradeep to help these strong and brave spirits who have battled depression. 'Special thanks to the very beautiful Chrisha Fernandes (model) without whom this wouldn't have been possible,' Vritti says. According to National Care Of Medical Health, 6.5 per cent of India's population suffers from one or the other serious mental health disorder. According to the study, there is no clear difference between rural and urban dwellers when it comes to mental health issues. As many as 42.5 per cent of corporate employees in India suffer from depression. Though there are effective measures and treatments, there is an acute shortage of mental health workers like psychologists, psychiatrists, and doctors, with one worker per 100,000 people. We present below, some of the fascinating artwork from "Broken Spirits", which aim to increase dialogue surrounding depression and celebrate and help the brave souls who have battled mental health issues.

Vritti is a recent graduate from Srishti Institute, Bangalore majored in Contemporary Art Practice. She calls herself a painter, an installation artist, and an art director.  Abijith Pradeep is pursuing Masters of Business.
